have you done mains with engine in car

I have the crank plate loose and I see 2 bolts behind the flywheel reluctor gear holding the starter bracket on. Has anyone pulled the flywheel and done the mains from the bottom? these bolts go into the main bearing crank plate.

To do the main bearings, you will need to remove the girdle, probably much easier with the motor out. I have heard of rod bearings done from underneath, but not main bearings.

Virtually impossible in a 928 thanks to the unique bottom end design. As 928racer already said, removing the crank is only made possible by removing the lower girdle assembly. I am not aware of any practical way to do this successfully without first removing the engine.

I assume, since you still have the engine in the car, that you pulled the oil pan by lifting/raising the engine from the cross member. Correct? I ask because I just replaced the pan gasket on my car by doing so. I was unaware of the 6mm allen bolt that holds the pick-up tube in place beforehand. It must have taken me two hours just to get the p/u tube out of the way as I thought it was stuck somehow after removing the, much more visible, two 10mm bolts. Very frustrating!

You guys are all great and Liz is right about every bread being different. God knows I am learning a few things as I go about how hard it is to work on this component built car. I do not want to come across as a know-it-all so please forgive any such impression. Just an old mechanic stubborn in his ways. Hey Bill, sit back and enjoy as I do when I read many of the fine threads around here.
Bill instead of moving the TT and the trans back, I moved the engine forward since it was already hanging by the chains, But you are right about there still being interference with the belhousing. So.... with an inch between the eng and the housing I Raised the TT and Housing.(eng had been lowered to access housing bolts)

NOTE: My TT/housing was under load. Lowering the engine was required to get at the Housing bolts,... and a Jack must be placed under the TT before you remove the Housing bolts completely out.

OK back to where I left off. (this took 3 hours, prob 2 hr thinking) Unbolting the flywheel. I am Really glad I got the 3/8 drive breaker bar, there would not have been enough room to get the socket in other wise.
BTW I marked the crank, flywheel is pined to the crank

Flywheel is off.

But I had to move the engine forward, and lift the TT as high as it would go (dont crush lines.)


REMEMBER to have the TT blocked or a floor jack under it before removing the housing bolts. You can raise and lower at will then for easy removal of the bolts.

I don't know how else to put it. I am impressed. Thank you very much for making your project a pleasure for so many others to enjoy, first off. You have quite the character. That much is obvious. The "consensus way" is not necessarily your preferred choice for doing things. That's an admirable characteristic to say the least.

So far, I just have one question and one only. Are you not feeling physically as though you've been in a bull fight after you get done working on your car for an evening or whenever it may be? Your approach to this looks like hell on the back and joints to be quite honest.
