Head Gaskets

I guess I'm just feeling motivated. I've made up my mind on doing the head gaskets. Haven't done a leak-down check yet, but irregardless of the results, I'm doing the gaskets, tb/wp as well as a complete refresh of all cooling related parts. I'm replacing the hoses, thermostat, and quite possibly, the expansion tank as I just noticed that it had some cracking in the region of the cap. I want to make sure I have a tight seal. Firgure I may as well thoroughly investigate that old radiator too.

I plan on doing all the work with the engine in the car for those who may be wondering about that. On my car, head gaskets can be done that way. :D

While it's fresh on my mind, does anyone know if the torque procedure is the same on my engine as it is the later 32V cars. I know that the sequence is the same because the manuals show an illustration on that but nothing more. On the 32V cars I believe the procedure is as follows:

Step 1: 15 ft/lb
Step 2: 90 degree turn
Step 3: 90 degree turn

Is this the same procedure for the earlier cars?

Stan, I guess I was wrong in assuming I had had my hands on every nut, bolt, and screw on a 928... What the heck is a "cross over" gasket?

Thanks Kilnred, I was just shortening the 928racer to Ray, but I didn't know I was talking to Stan aka admin.
I will try to remember.
It is nice to get to know everyones names incase we get to meet some day.
Some have issues with putting their name on the net. not me.
Hell google mine [Brad Haugen] or my stage name [bwmac] (sounds like B.W. Mac)

I treat the full disclosure of my name and personal information in a case-by-case way when I use the web. Here, of course, you are all peers of mine. Also, my real life experience with car people has led me to believe that they are honest, trustworthy, and hard working folks.

I try to restrict using the admin account for handling the administrative related tasks, but sometimes I forget I am logged on.

Most sites I use my complete email address, or name, as my user name. Since nobody had taken 928racer yet, I thought I would grab it. Hopefully I will be a 928 racer again some day :)

Well guys, it looks like it's one more night at work for me & then straight to a top-end tear down on the '84. I like to stay organized, so a trip to Wal-Mart for a large storage bin is probably in order. Normally, I don't like to work this way in that I rather have all of the parts that I need to complete the job before I get started taking things apart. Since I have no clue the extent of the damage or deferred maintenance there may be I guess I'm going to have to suck it up & work backwards.

Never pulled a head on a 928. I'm hoping the cam towers cut me a break. They look like a bear to remove with the engine in the car. Also, I'm hoping that I can pull the exhaust manifolds with the heads.
