Thanks for the explanation Malcolm. Follow-on questions: What type pf plug fits the rectangular port of an '88 and can an OBD be used?

I believe the rectangular port is a 12 pin device thats pictured in the WSM.....I'll look for it.



I understand the Porsche diag software cannot be communicated to with an OBD........recall the software was developed ~20 years ago now

Diagnostic results were disappointing. I attached the 19-pin adapter to the diagnostic connector on the '90 GT, and attached an OBD-II scanner. The scanner went thru all of the communication protocols, and gave the version of one of the protocols - but absolutely no other info. No codes, no data stream.

Perhaps some of our electronics experts might be able to help, but so far, it looks as if Porsche had no early implementation of any OBD standards.
