Well, it's good to at least know how it was originally done! I had wondered if the curved bit of metal battery holder was not an afterthought to a potential problem. Apparently it was!

Mine is original, and it is not rubber coated. There is a rubber seal around the lid to the box, but that won't cure what you are thinking about.

Here are a few pictures. Note, the underside of the battery box lid shows 2 rubber strips located above where the battery terminals would be. Thus, there is some measure of insulation protection (my memory was off on this). Also, see how the battery box is attached from below. Lastly, the rust looking stuff in the area of the battery box opening isn't rust, but cosmoline - which is everywhere on these cars from the factory for overseas shipping.
