Battery in 1978 928

Mike, How about a photo of the battery box, so we can attempt to determine if it has been replaced or modified?

My 83 does not have a securing mechanism either. It has drain holes in the bottom, but I see nothing to attach anything to. I also have a deep cycle Yellow top like Brad so a bracket probably would not fit anyway,,,,I just have enough clearance to close the compartment and there is only a little room on each side. So it is all gravity for me as well. The only place there is a little room for movement is back to front. And since I have put in a 0 gauge battery cable,,,it does not move much

I did spray the entire battery compartment with spay bed liner to prevent rust and keep the top from possibly arcing out on the lid if something heavy went in the back by mistake and bent the lid.

Porsche document 4582.21, 928 Service Information, one of the first books issued covering the 928, shows a photo of the opened battery box. It shows a fitted metal lid covering the entire battery, apparently held down by four screws. There are two screws on each of the long sides of the cover.

Remember that the battery box is not part of the body on the early cars, but is a separate box bolted to the transaxle...

Wally, I did not know that. Very interesting! I think I have seen that though on one of those 928's without the body...the kind of deal that shows off all the "guts" of the car...

Wally is correct. Mt 78 does not have the battery hold down like my later cars did. There are no holes for one either. Instead, gravity, and the lid to the battery box, hold it in just fine.
