New wheels

Hello everyone I'm a new member since purchasing a 1981 928 GT competition,I would like to change the 16" x 7" dish wheels to something a little more interesting but I can't seem to locate information that will tell me what size wheels I could increase to in diameter and width. Any suggestions?

I have a set of five spoke 997 wheels I'm considering selling. I'd purchased them used awhile back for when I found a shark for myself, but the 90 S4 I purchased recently already had a set of nice aftermarket wheels that are growing on me more and more so they may stay.

I don't know offhand how they'd work on an '81, but I'm sure a little research on Rennlist would yield the exact offsets, widths, etc, of the 997's (and I'll take a look at the backs of the wheels first chance I get and update here since those details are usually stamped on the backsides of the spokes), but for now all I remember is that the front wheels have 235/40-18 tires installed.

The date codes on the tires that came with the wheels indicate they'd need to be replaced, so if anyone is interested and would be willing to pay dismount fees, that would save on shipping costs.

The wheels aren't perfect, having some chips front and rear in the finish from what I can only assume were poor attempts at tire removals/installs, so I'd take $1k plus shipping (or stop by and pick them up - I'm at zip code 62930 in southern IL) and they'll come with new aftermarket centercaps. I was not given lugs nuts with the wheels, so a set of those would be necessary too.

Sounds like a fair price but it's not exactly what I'm looking for, I have become fixated on the ROH Modena wheels unfortunately I can't seem to locate them. They've discontinued manufacturing this model at the beginning of the year and I was hoping to find someone who is selling the sack.

If you've not already called a few distributors to determine where they send (who buys) their unsold inventory as a liquidator, that could be an avenue to try. I was also looking for a discontinued model of another wheel manufacturer a few years ago and learned of a couple different shops in Florida and Utah that usually bought everyone elses unsold stock. At one point I even contacted the manufacturer in Italy to inquire about similar liquidators in Europe.

If that turns up nothing, there's always SearchTempest for searching all Craigslist sites. You never know, there may be a set the next town over...but who advertises in the local newspaper any more?

Indeed there is plenty of info here - just try out the search. But some general things.
Early cars (mine is an 83) will have more issues trying to find wheels that fit. Mostly due to the fact of how much you are willing to compromise on the orignal offsets of your standard wheels. We have a deep offset and you will not find that outside of a custom wheel. That does not mean you cannot use a lower offset, but you just need to be aware of it and the potential to change the geometry of the suspension if too radical.
Next - I tend to believe that larger than 17 does not fit with the design of the body (personal preference of course!) especially early models. But then the problem is trying to find a 17 inch wheel these days! Almost all are 18 and up. Of course if you like 18 or 19 go for it,, like I said that is just me.
So your best bet is looking at the options used on later model 928s with success and with decent offsets. To my knowledge there is only one model of wheel that has the offset you need, and that is on a 94-95 GTS, it looks great... BUT not many of those cars were built and even less of those wheels floating around.

I actually like my manhole covers much more these days, if I run across those wheel I would get them, but for now I will keep my Anodized ones. You can make them look very good (see recent post on this). Bottom line is do your research, then get the ones you like best that have workable specs.
