1983 accessories work when engine off, but not when running.

hi all,

i've just joined up to the forum in the hope of being able to help a friend who has recently purchased a 928 in need of some TLC.

i am a mechanic specialising in classic Benz stuff, but thought i should call on some assistance of the "been there, done that" kind.

i've been sorting through various issues, such as a dead master cylinder, stale fuel, plugs - usual stuff - and have now moved on to the electrical system.

the essential problem is that when the car is running, nothing seems to work - headilghts, windows, wipers, etc. when the ignition is switched on, but the car isn't running, everything works (except the electric seat - which is the fuse/relay for this?)?

any tips would be greatly appreciated

I'm by NO means an expert or even close to novice on these cars. But, from what I've read, is that a lot of electrical troubles such as those you describe, could be a result of the ignition switch itself being bad. If anything, at least that could be something to check out.

I hope more knowledgeable blokes chime in.

Yup, I vote for the ignition switch too! Pretty inexpensive part (less than $100) and not to bad to install. When they go bad ALL SORTS of seemingly unrelated problems start to show up. Some of them start out as intermittent too so it is a cheap easy thing to replace and see if that fixes the problems!

thank you - igniton switch it is! jiggling the key restores functionality.

how about the electric seat? which is the fuse/relay?

also, does anyone happen to have a good warm up reg for sale?
