Bad Noise was created by dundasdude
I have an 86 928 with a 5 spd. During deceleration I get a noise (best I can describe is like a machine gun)that corresponds exactly with a definite vibration in the shifter that matches engine speed not wheel speed. I put it up on a hoist but without the load it was difficult to tell if it was trans or torque tube vibration. Anyone else experience this?

I don't have much help for you, but don't rule out the wheel bearings, until you have checked them. I had the vibration issue, but not the machine gun sound, and it was rear wheel bearing. The prior owner changed torque tube bearings in an attempt to correct.
Greg's site has some hints but not that match directly. The drive train link is www.nichols.nu/cat15.htm

I don't know if this helps but ihad the same thing happen to me while driving a water tanker. I down shifted while decelerating heard the noise and the clutch on the tanker let go.The tanker was unable to shift and had to be towed. Just a thought. Let us know what you find.
