what tools are a must have ?

I defer to the experienced here. Beyond ratchets, wrenches and screw drivers, what tools are a must have to work on the 928. I would like to start a list for us newbie mechanics. What do we need , what is it for and were do I get one. I'm interested in guauges, scanners, gear pullers, what works and what does'nt. Should I rent or buy and if you can what jobs can I do with them. I'm hoping this can helpus direct our dollars to where it will do the most good(and create a great christmass wish list)

87 Shark is SERIOUS about his 928 work! NICE! I tell you the tool panel in the back of the car is pretty good for most things you would need to do, but obviously isn't going to take care of the big stuff like you want to do!

My hat is off to you! While these cars are pretty complex there really isn't anything that is over the head of even a modestly competent wrench turner! You can save a lot of money turning them yourself too!

I think the problem has always been how crappy the Work Shop Manuals (WSM's) are for the novice. They assume a HUGE amount of knowledge about not just working on cars but working 928's before you even start...so most of us look at a WSM write up and then go back inside and just have another beer. To get to the vacuum stuff behind the dash step one would be: REMOVE DASH! OMG...REALLY! How many of us could look at that step one and just go, "ok, lets do it." Not many. Thankfully there have been many REALLY GOOD write ups on stuff like that here in the 928 community!

This would be a good start for anyone wanting to maintain there car
Torque wrenches and other stuff as you need it


I am on my 4th box due to growing out of them.
This one is a $4500 Mac Tech 1000 tool box and somewhere around $30,000 of hand tools (mostly Snap-on and Mac)

OK, that's a pretty general but comprehensive list.

I'm going to go with some more specific stuff.

Gotta have a flywheel lock tool and Kempf tensioner tool.

You've got a multi-meter on there, I prefer a FLUKE meter. Your preference, needs autoranging voltage and resistance (ohms), nice to have is a top of the line unit that can be used as a tach.


Liftbars from Ken are an absolute must-have.
While you're there, I'd order a 'blink'r' and a 32v'r cam timing tool.

I'd also go with some service covers, low range jack (for use with your liftbars) and good jackstands with a round top that lines up under the lifbars.

If you don't have a full mechanics set of tools, you need to have 1/2 inch drive 27mm deep well socket (for steering wheel nut and also crankshaft turning). 17mm allen socket for draining the trans (some are 10mm), better make it a full set of allen sockets.
