928 Porsche In-Tank Fuel Pump Repair was created by Rich928
I was experiencing hot starting problems with my 1979 Porsche 928. I had read that this could be caused by a failed in-tank fuel pump.
The in-tank fuel pump part number 928 608 013 00 has been discontinued by Porsche.
All 1978 - 1979 and 1992 Euro/ROW 1993 US -1995 928 GTS cars have in-tank fuel pumps. Other 928 S4s with M460 have an in-tank pump.
My Porsche repair shop is Exotic Motorwerks, Dan Warner is a top notch 928 Mechanic. We first checked to see if there was continuity between the pump plus and negative electrical terminals and found it was an open circuit. The question to answer was if the motor was burned out which would cause the open circuit.
The pump was removed and in addition to finding that the pump to fuel tank connector hose was cracked, we found that the negative wire was not connected between the terminal and pump motor which explained the open circuit. I did a check with 12V between the positive and negative pins of the pump motor and found it functioned so the pump could be repaired.
My in-tank fuel pump was repaired. Please find attached a brief article explaining the repair.

Just a Spring 2026 update: Porsche Atlanta Perimeter shows 928 608 013 00 as superseded by 928 608 013 01, Electric Fuel Pump. In Tank Assy. and as of May 2026 it's currently available at $937. Sunset Porsche has it listed as available at $821. Not a recommendation, just a quick search; likely to be available from other sources as well.
