1990 928 GT Air bag failure warning light keeps being displayed. How do I diagnose?
Repair shop wants to rebuild entire wiring harness for this issue. Seems overkill.

IS the light always on? The left lower lever on the steering column will turn off the visual display on the bottom of the instruments, but not the light itself. There are several reasons for the light to go on, and I'm not competent to give the complete rundown, but Alan Moore in Phoenix is (do a search for Alan on Renlist 928 Forum). Others may be as well. Alan's subtitle on Rennlist 928 Forum is 'electron wrangler.
If the light comes on when the car is started, and later goes off after a few minutes of running/driving, then it may be the controller itself. I believe there is one or more capacitors in the unit which hold charge but as they age lose the ability to hold a full charge. When they reach full charge again, the light goes off. I've had that happen on two different GTS's, where the light would not come on if the engine was started within a few hours after being turned off, but if the car was not started again for several days, it repeated the 'on, for a minute or so, then off' action.

Did you plug in the Bosch KTS300 diagnostic tool (or other compatible tool) and clear the fault? Sometimes a low battery or voltage glitch will cause such a fault. If the light continues to go off after repeated clearing the fault in the diagnostic tester then there likely is a problem.
I had such a problem on my 1993 928 GTS. I swapped instrument clusters and the problem went away so it apparently was a failure in the instrument cluster. I couldn't find the cause of the failure.

Re the air bag light, I had Dave Chamberland look at that and several other issues in 2016. His Bosch Hammer indicated that the problem was the air bag in the steering wheel. I used the diagnostic tool I purchased from 928 ecu repair in the Netherlands to try and reset it but couldn't make it happen. I took the connections apart several times but couldn't eliminate the problem. ergo the light in the dash board is still on
