Instrument Lighting

I am a new owner of an 81 928. So far, the car has been great and very well taken care of, so I just need to resolve a few minor things.

One of those is the dash lighting-- it is very dim, when it works at all. My prime suspect is the rheostat, since fiddling with the knob does seem to have some minimal effect and I have had this problem with other cars.

I know I could just jumper it, but is that rheostat a standard part or something? I can't seem to find it on any of the usual 928 parts sites.

In the long run, I will probably go with LEDs (I have them on my 911S), but I'm not sure when I will actually get around to that.

I have the same problem with my 1979 928. I wired past the display light dimmer and it made no difference. All the illumination bulbs were replaced. The problem is the light lens have aged and don't transmit enough of the light from the instrument bulbs.

I haven't experimented to see if the outer coating of the lens can be buffed up to pass more light. That is on my list of things to do.

Thanks. Apparently the LED conversion requires a different rheostat anyway, so I think I will jumper it for now and then go with LEDs down the road.
