I haven't replaced shocks on my 1989 928 S4 with 42K miles on it

I have a 1989 S4 5 Speed in mint condition, and only 42K miles. I've owned the car now for 26 years. It always sleeps in the garage, but in recent months when I do take it out, I've noticed how sloshy the handling has become. I think the shocks are done, not due to milage so much as sheer age. I don't expect the car to handle like my Stelvio but I do think much can be done to improve it.

Part of me is hoping that shock technology has progress so much in 30 years when the OEM shocks were fitter, such that a new set might transform the handling to its utmost potential, but what replacement shocks are the best ?

I live in the states, so if anyone knows what I should be buying, please let me know.

The two choices are Koni or BILSTEIN. At 165,000 miles I replaced them on my S4. Check with the vendors to see what is available. It is a fairly involved job, you may want to find an expert to do the job.

I'd also recommend on replacing the suspension bushings as well. Since you have to have an alignment done, I'd also recommend checking the tie rods (inner and outer) as well as the upper and lower ball joints.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to have them checked, but the care only has 42K and has always been garaged, so they might be ok, depends. Some of the rubber has survived the test of time surprisingly well, so I'm not 100% sure time alone would cause them to go bad.

Time, heat, and stress reduces the elasticity of rubber. The suspension bushings are now 32 years old. How resilient are tires that are 32 years old????
