Is the front spoiler really needed? What happens if it is removed?

The spoiler is more of a visual item than functional for normal road speeds. The early 928s didn't have them and the S4 and newer 928s don't have one, it was an add-on. Your 928 will drive just fine without it installed.

Let me add to what Rich has posted.

At normal speeds, I would agree, the front spoiler is not necessary for aerodynamics. I have driven an 87+ car both with and without a spoiler and the front spoiler on an S4 is a necessity at speeds above what is allowed by law. The front end gets very light and scary at Warp speed without a front spoiler.
I have driven a older body style 928 at triple digit speed for many hours but front and rear spoilers were installed and the car was rock steady.
