The 5 speed shift linkage- was created by Normy1
My '85 5 speed has started doing something in the past week that baffles me. I go to put it into reverse...
[For you automatic types, this means moving the shifter way left, push down, all the way forward....and feel it go into the gear]
But it seems like my shifter has shifted to the left. I go to put it in reverse, and I can't get it there! I have had to remove the shift boot a few times and move the rod to the left right against the console. Something has happened, the shifter has "moved" to the left, apparently.
Tonight, I purposely "banged" the shifter to the extreme right, and it went into reverse instantly.
I have spent some time in the 928 WSM's and in Volume III page 34-8c it shows the shift linkage. What comes to mind is WHY did Porsche use part number 15? It connects two feet forward at a ball joint. Why? Why not just have a ball joint welded right there?
I wonder if the joint that has bolt 19 has slipped. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I've spent the day perusing Rennlist, and despite the fact that I am BANNED, my other screen name tells me that it is the shifter coupling that is probably the culprit!
[I'm sure that Randy Venier still loves me....]
Anyway, I've investigated the ways to fix this, and I think the best on is just to buy a new shift joint from the major supplier, 928 International. 928 Motorsports has an amazing part that allows you to adjust your shift feel. OK, but I don't know how to adjust that! All I want is for the car to go into reverse~
I'm just going to buy a new shift coupler from 928Intl. This solves my problem and keeps a 928 vendor in business.

It isn't listed on the website to my knowledge. Roger and Laura are best by phone or email.
