1978 Battery Box was created by mike m
Can anyone tell me what secures the battery in the battery box ? The box is bigger than the battery and I haven't been able to figure out how it's secured in the box. I even talked to a few Porsche mechanics and they had no idea.
Any help would be appreciated.

On my '88 there is a clamp that holds the bottom of the battery. I'm not sure if the model years this applies to, but 928Intl have a used one:

- you can get half price in their current sale

Hi,
Are you sure you have the correct battery fitted? There shouldn't be a whole lot of wiggle room. The 928 battery is huge. I am not sure about your MY, but on my cars the battery is situated by a bracket that fits onto the lip of the battery and is fastened by a 13/15mm bolt to the tray IIRC. I recall a discussion once where some owners with very early cars reported that there was no such bracket or other means for affixing the battery from the factory.

The battery box on the early cars was attached to the rear suspension, not the body. There was a cover that attached directly to the battery box. None of this was attached to the body, or to the battery box access hatch in the bottom of the spare tire well.

the battery is not secured in the box by anything on my 78, which is stock and unmodifed there. It is a snug fit. It is also as Wally described.

I should note that I have some foam in it to cushion the sides
