Sharktuning? 1988 S4 Auto Us Spec

In a previous discussion concerning performance enhancements. Several learned members mention a process referred to as "Sharktuning" to help bring my car to the best state of tune and performance. Based on those discussions I am ordering an X-pipe, leaving my stock cats and buying one of Roger's cat back exhaust systems to help my car exhale. Again, My position at the bottom end of the learning curve remains a constant so the question must be asked.
What exactly is "Sharktuning"? Is there a resource or link that could help me understand the process? Or just maybe would someone take the time to explain this to me. And lastly, I live in Nashville Tn where very few 928's live so finding a mechanic who knows this car well remains an issue. Does anyone know of someone say within a couple hundred miles of me that will work on this car? Let me know. I am beyond my ability after the basics. Thank You in Advance!!!

In basic terms the 928 has 2 computers; fuel injection and ignition. Each computer has an Eprom which are removed and replaced by programmable Eproms (PEMs). The OEM Eproms have generic programming which Porsche developed for your model which may not be ideal for your car, where the car is driven and the state of other engine parameters.

The Sharktuner, a box which connects to the computers through the diag. port and to a laptop containing the Sharktuner software. The car is then run through full driving aspects, data recorded on laptop then the PEMs loaded with adjusted programs for optimal tuning for you particular car.

Once you make any major changes to the exhaust/intake/FIs etc then the car can be re-tuned for your own choices.

Its best to find someone close to you who has a Sharktuner and knows how to use it or do a group buy with the local 928 folks.....thats what we did in Western Canada

Just as a reminder, I am always happy to help wherever I find time. For hands on stuff, I would need to schedule way ahead to be able to meet with you to do maintenance duties or performance mods. I am sorry that I haven't returned your recent calls. I think you may have even sent text messages. Sometimes, when I am very busy, I can be bad about returning calls/texts. I admit that that is a fault of mine. We need to meet up one of these weekends or something! It is nice to have a neighbor who shares the 928 interest. Again, I am so sorry for not being a better contact.

Malcomb, After studying the info from the link you sent I think That Sharktuning will be left alone for now. At my level of skill and knowledge I think simplicity is best for now. I will just stick with the best intake and exhaust setup I can get together and run the car for a while. Not to say I won't be back for more help. Thank you all once again for sharing your wisdom. I hope to someday be able to repay the 928OC Gentleman in some way. And Austin, I will certainly get in touch with you someday soon. A very wise decision Robert.

Too many 928s are no longer with us due to some not willing to understand the fundamentals of what a truly remarkable machine it is when running just as Porsche intended.

When a 928 is running as the factory intended it they are pretty amazing beasts. After you get them running as the factory intended THEN play with them a bit more and make them REALLY sing.

The Sharktuner is NOT for the faint of heart, but when used by a master they can produce impressive results.
