Notes on Alignments

I expect it was Earl I had it from, so likely the same information.

What is this steering rack center bolt that I see talked about?
Is it the lock on the steering column or is it a line up hole on the rack?

I have the bolt, and presumed it fit into the rack body.

The steering ract centering bolt centers the rack and locks it in place. This will ensure equal turning from side to side and allow you to center the steering wheel ont he splines of the column. It's only a few bucks. I know 928 Specialists carries it and I assume other vendors do too.

For home alignments, I will drive the car up on on ramps so I can install the centering bolt, and loosen the tie-rod nuts (sometime you need the extra room to break them free). Then back the car off the ramps and proceed with the alignment.

BTW, I did a video and created a spreadsheet to do your own alignments. It's a bit rough, and I plan on re-visitng it one of these coming days to make it more user friendly. Hope it helps.
