Ok, chiming in a bit late, going to come across as an asshole, but that is normal.

First off.

Why do you think you need to pull the engine? Simple question. Please list why you think that needs to be done.

Nothing you say you need to replace even comes close to needing an engine transplant. It actually comes across as stupid wanting to do it. So, again, why do you think you need to?

I can see the reasons for wanting to, not a good idea, but go ahead.

Brake system...............if you need to pull the master, ok.....pull it, then pressure bleed it all, a few times if it makes you happy.

Lord, nothing you are talking about on your to do list requires pulling the engine. It might make more sense to you to do so, but trust me, it does not.

OK Sean; Constructive advise is good. You are not an Asshole, No offence taken.
I understand that I can do the intake and most of the lines with the engine in the car.
I thought it was easier to do the heads with the engine out of the car?

Remember this is my first Porsche so as a mechanic I am also curious as to what all I would find when the engine is out of the car.

I want to replace ALL lines, coolant, fuel, electrical, or any thing that could be baked or just old. I assume the metal lines will be ok.

I also need to replace the rear main seal, so I have to split the bell housing to get the flywheel out. I need to install the new pktentioner, poss. new water pump,
This would be a good easy time for me to pull the torque tube and inspect those bearings, maybe replace them and check my shaft to see if it is still true. (Vibration on/off load sometimes?)

I am going to spray out the engine bay and see how it cleans up.
Roll the engine upside down and recheck those pan bolts, and since Roger found some engine mount issues, I will check and replace them if needed, but I think mine are fine.

So what do you think?, would you pull it?

Brad

It's so easy to do, I see no reason not to pull the engine. That's just my opinion. Your engine should have head bolts as opposed to studs. On the '85-'86 32V motor, the engine must come out to do the gaskets because of the lack of clearance with the studs in place. Because you have bolts, this is not a problem.

If you were just doing the head gaskets, fuel lines, and intake then I would say leave it in. Doing the rear main, motor mounts, torque tube, and pan gasket changes the dynamics a bit though. Having the engine out will make all of those jobs much easier. I actually think you would save quite a bit of time by pulling the engine.

Hey, great! Nice visual there, Brad. At least you have a start on it now. Keep the pictures coming as you make progress. I wish I would've documented my engine swap now.

I posted a video in the tech tips if you are interested in my vid skills.

I think some of my commentary skills suck but I got through it.
