89 S4 cam gear adjustment

I would like someone who knows to give me the mechanics how to.

On my 89 S4 the cam gear keyway is about 5/16 inch
The key on the cam is about half that so that when I slide the gear on it can move up to 2 1/2 teeth from left to right.

The 3 small machine screws on the rotor bolt through 3/8" slots on the gear to the cam hub.
This means that I can place the gear anywhere within 2 1/2 teeth of where it should be.

What is the normal shop procedure?

all the way counter clock ways?
all the way clock ways?
or in the center?

I know some of you who have done 30 - 100s of these would know

I know enough to catch it and other then me getting a deg. wheel (which I will, for in the future) dose anyone have some advice.

The right answer is to use a cam adjustment tool to locate it with reference to the crankshaft so the cams are timed properly.

If you're replacing your old ones you might be able to see the marks on them if you kept them separate.

Otherwise, I'd get in touch with Ken (Porken at liftbars.com ) and get a set of his 32v'r cam alignment tools. It's the only right way to do it without pulling the cam covers and using the expensive Porsche cam alignment tool.

It's not that difficult to do or an expensive tool to have. No reason to guess at it.

I used the PorKen tool to set my cam timing. I was quite happy with it, and recommend it.

I asked Roger to send one with the new vented brake rotors and pads

The answer you are looking for is:

Place the threaded holes of the star (thing that mounts to the Cam) in the center of the slots on the cam gear.

This will give you the Max +/- adjustment to fine tune the Cam Timing, I like and use the PorKen 32vr tool.
